Seagull serial numbers are usually easy to find. The most common location is on the label inside the soundhole, visible when you look through the sound opening.
Pro tip: Use a flashlight angled inside the soundhole. The label is usually on the back brace or the inside back panel. On older guitars, the serial may be stamped rather than printed.
The earliest Seagull guitars used simple sequential serial numbers. Each guitar received the next number in sequence, and the year can be determined by matching the number to the production range.
| Serial Range | Year |
|---|---|
| 1-60 | 1982 |
| 61-500 | 1983 |
| 501-1500 | 1984 |
| 1501-3500 | 1985 |
| 3501-6000 | 1986 |
| 6001-8940 | 1987 |
| 8941-12000 | 1988 |
| 12001-15400 | 1989 |
| 15401-18800 | 1990 |
| 18801-22200 | 1991 |
| 22201-26000 | 1992 |
From 1993 to 1995, Seagull used a 7-digit format: YWWNNNN, where:
| Position | Digits | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Y | Last digit of year (3-5) |
| 2-3 | WW | Week of year (01-53) |
| 4-7 | NNNN | Production sequence number |
From 1995 to 2007, Seagull used an 8-digit format: YYWWDRRR, where:
| Position | Digits | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | YY | Fiscal year (starts August 1) |
| 3-4 | WW | Week of year (01-53) |
| 5 | D | Day of week (1=Monday ... 7=Sunday) |
| 6-8 | RRR | Production ranking for that day |
Seagull's fiscal year runs August 1 through July 31, so fiscal year "05" roughly spans August 2004 to July 2005. The decoder reports the approximate calendar year.
Since 2008, Seagull has used a 12-digit product code. This format encodes product and model information, but does not encode the exact manufacturing date. The decoder will identify it as a modern Canadian-made Seagull.
If you need the precise build year for a 12-digit serial, contact Godin customer service with the serial number.
| Format | Pattern | Era | Example | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sequential | 3-5 digits | 1982-1992 | 100 = 1983 | Early La Patrie production |
| 7-digit | YWWNNNN | 1993-1995 | 3150101 = 1993, week 15 | Year digit + week + sequence |
| 8-digit | YYWWDRRR | 1995-2007 | 05231501 = ~2005 | Fiscal year, week, day, ranking |
| 12-digit | 12 digits | 2008+ | 012345678901 | Product code; exact year not encoded |
Seagull guitars were originally built in La Patrie, a small village in southeastern Quebec known for its furniture and woodworking heritage. The La Patrie factory focused on solid-top acoustics with hand-crafted attention to detail.
As production grew, Seagull manufacturing moved to the larger Godin facility in Quebec. Modern Seagull guitars are built alongside other Godin family brands, sharing the same quality-control standards and Canadian craftsmanship.
Enter your serial number exactly as it appears on your guitar's label in the tool at the top of this page, then click Decode. The tool returns production year, factory, and country for free.
On most Seagull guitars, the serial number is on the label inside the soundhole. Early guitars may have it stamped on the neck block.
It depends on the format. 7-digit serials use YWWNNNN (year digit, week, sequence). 8-digit serials use YYWWDRRR (fiscal year, week, day, ranking). 12-digit serials are product codes without a public date format.
Seagull 12-digit serials (2008+) do not encode the exact manufacturing date. For precise dating, contact Godin customer service with the serial number.
Enter your serial in the decoder above. For sequential serials, match the number to the range table. For 7-digit and 8-digit serials, the year is encoded directly. For 12-digit serials, only an approximate "2008+" range is possible.
Yes. Seagull guitars are built in Quebec, Canada by the Godin family of companies.
Value depends on model, era, and condition. Entry-level models typically sell for $300-$600 used, while solid-wood models and limited editions can reach $800-$1,500 or more.
Seagull is one brand under the Godin family. Godin-brand guitars often feature more advanced electronics and premium materials, while Seagull focuses on solid-top acoustics at accessible prices.
Seagull/Godin customer service can help date guitars, especially those with 12-digit product codes. Our decoder provides instant results for all documented formats.
The 12-digit format introduced in 2008 encodes product/model information rather than the manufacturing date. The decoder correctly identifies these as modern Canadian-made Seagulls, but cannot extract a specific year.
