Fender bass setup measurements
Fender’s bass setup guidance measures action at the 17th fret, from the top of the fret to the underside of the string. The current Fender bass models in this lookup use these starting figures:

To check bass relief, capo the first fret, hold the fourth string down at the last fret, and measure the gap above the 8th fret. Set relief before adjusting saddle height, then retune and recheck. Fender notes that published values are minimum guidance: raise the action if your attack, tuning or fret condition needs more room.
Choose the pickup target by pickup family
The bass planner does not assume that every Jazz Bass has the same pickup setup or that every P Bass uses the same pickup. Jaguar, Jazzmaster and Mustang setup references
Offset-style bridges and vibrato systems differ by model and year. First confirm whether your guitar has a floating vibrato or a fixed hardtail bridge. The selected model’s guide links from the planner so you can follow the bridge-specific steps before changing bridge height, vibrato float or spring tension.
The lookup includes action and relief references for supported models. For these 9.5-inch-radius offsets, the action reference follows Fender’s general 9.5-to-12-inch-radius starting row: 4/64 in on both sides at the 17th fret. This is not a separate specification for each model year, so check the exact model manual before moving the saddles. Fender’s generic factory table does not give a Jaguar-, Jazzmaster- or Mustang-position-specific pickup-height target, so the planner leaves that figure blank. Recommended adjustment order
- Confirm strings and tuning. Use the model’s listed string gauge as a baseline, inspect string condition and tune to playing pitch.
- Check the bridge and vibrato. Identify the exact hardware and follow the model guide before changing its height, float or tension.
- Set neck relief. Measure using the method for your instrument and make small truss-rod adjustments.
- Set action. Use the model’s measurement point and the reference as a starting point; make small saddle changes and retune.
- Set pickup height. Use a verified figure for the installed pickup family, or the pickup maker’s guidance.
- Check intonation and stability. Compare notes at playing pitch and confirm the guitar or bass stays in tune after playing and using the vibrato.
The order matters because changing relief affects action, and changing string height changes the distance between the strings and pickups. Do not force a truss rod or remove material from the nut based on a calculator value. If an adjustment binds, the neck has a twist, or frets are uneven, have the instrument assessed by a qualified repairer.
